What's In A Name?

Do you know what your name means, what it stands for? Parents name their children all kinds of names for different reasons. Maybe it just sounds nice, or someone in the family has that name or it was the name of a grandparent or close relative. Whatever the reason, that child has to live with that name for the rest of their life, whether they like it or not, unless they decide to legally change it.

Jabez' name means "pain"; his mother named him that because she had pain when he was born. (I Chronicles 4:9). It's a wonder he wasn't in pain all of his life. But God blessed him! Jacob was named so because he was trying to come out of his mother's womb first by grabbing hold of his brother, Esau's heel. (Genesis 25:24-26). Jacob's name means "supplanter", one who takes over on purpose, in the place of another. And that is the kind of life Jacob lived; he was a conniver, a trickster; but God changed his name to, "Israel". (Genesis 32:24-30; 35:10). Names are important and significant. Parents must choose wisely what they name their children, because children can live up to their names, good or bad.
There is One Who has truly lived up to His Name; His Name is, Jesus. Joseph was told by the angel that he was to name Him, "Jesus", because He will save His people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21). God had a plan and a purpose for Jesus' Name in the earth. Jesus lived, suffered, bled and died, to save us from our sins; and then rose again. Now He is seated at the right hand of God the Father, interceding for us: and there is no other name under the heaven given to men that can save us: only the Name, "JESUS". "Jesus, the Name high over all, in hell and earth or sky. Angels and men before it fall, and devils fear and fly." There is power in the Name of Jesus! "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the Name that is above every name, that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Philippians 2:9-11.
If you don't know, search to see what your name means. Check where it originated from: some names were just made up by our parents. In some cases, because our fore parents couldn't spell, they misspelled the name and gave it a different meaning. Whatever you name is now, it will change when we stand before Jesus in heaven. He has a new name for all of us. He says, "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it." Revelation 2:17.

I was in a church service one time when there was a "prophet" praying for the people. After a time, he called for an offering and had his mind totally on the offering instead of the people coming for prayer. One man went for prayer while the offering was being taken and the "prophet" told the man to come back to another service and then he would pray for him.

When we focus on money and things – possessions, we put them before God and forget about Him. Jesus said it is hard for a rich man to enter into heaven. Why is this so? Because he feels he has all he needs and doesn't need God, the One who has the whole world in His hands. A rich man depends on his riches and possessions to gain whatever happiness he needs in life: not realizing that the mammon is temporal and will pass away.

In this day and time men need encouragement like never before. They need to know that they are loved and very much need in this world. They also need Godly wisdom and understanding of the ways of the kingdom of God. Jesus is our supreme example in how to live as holy men of God. He prayed often to the Father, putting His earthly life completely in God's hands.
